I don't love G+.
For me, if you're going to be a social network LIKE Facebook, I need you to offer me a whole bunch of cool stuff that Facebook DOESN'T do. Now, G + does have some interesting possibilities, and I'm using it mostly to connect with other librarians.
However, I'm having trouble with the fact that Google seems to always want to connect every aspect of my life - aspects I want to keep separate. The first thing I did was delete some G+ contacts, only to have the same contacts deleted in my email. UGH!
I guess I'm waiting to see if it "catches on". Until then, I'm not in love.

I'm not a big fan of DMs, but mainly because to me they tend to be horndog users looking to talk dirty off the public timeline. A couple of those and it'll just ruin it for ya.
Now when it comes to Business I would recommend that it be used to communicate off line for issue resolution or follow up and obviously to share sensitive data, but now this requires that the Business follow the user in order for that to work.
I do not condone it being the only method of interaction because of the people like me who notice those things and definitely not to spam! I really don't care all that much for auto-reply dms but I have seen a few instances where it worked.

How do you feel about DM's on twitter? Personally, I listen for any @/comments, but I can't stand DM's. I find it's mostly people sending me an automated message saying "Thanks for following me. Be sure to follow me on facebook too" which just leaves me cold. I hate those!

It's always hard to meet people (I find) the older we get, unless it's actually through some sort of work environment. But I think you're doing all the right things. Meetup is great and just sitting and smiling in a coffee shop might do wonders and allow someone to approach you.

I've found it challenging to meet new friends as well, and I'm neither shy nor antisocial. It's just the follow through required sometimes. I'd say a book club (hey, try something new, right?) is a great way to meet thirty somethings. I'd also say look out for wine tastings (those can be pretty social) and volunteer somewhere.
But remember - if you try and replace me as your BFF, I will kick your ass.
